About the State Fair of Texas

Since its inception in 1886, the State Fair of Texas has celebrated all things Texan by promoting agriculture, education, and community involvement through quality entertainment in a family-friendly environment. The State Fair of Texas is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with proceeds helping to preserve and improve our home, Fair Park; underwrite museums, community initiatives, and scholarship programs to support students throughout the Lone Star State pursuing higher education; and help improve State Fair operations. 

 

SUMMARY

Planning details and execution of fairgrounds-wide agriculture education exhibits under the direction of the livestock manager and senior vice president. Provides support to contractors and oversees daily attendance and tasks of temporary event interns.

 

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Utilization of State Fair data platforms and other technology will be a daily occurrence. 
  • Corresponds with customers via phone, email and in person to answer questions and problem solve issues in preparation for and during the event. 
  • Manages event locations by ensuring proper set up, execution and tear down.  
  • Manages set up work crew but jumps in where needed. 
  • Coordinating with caterers, bar staff, event staff, others. 
  • Coordinates with contest interns, outside contractors and Fair vendors.  
  • Interacts with donors to assist the Development Director in a successful Auction Day. 

Marginal Functions: 

  • Support the Mission Statement of the State Fair of Texas. 
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and other duties as assigned. 
  • Comply with all internal, state and federal regulations. 
  • Complete all training as directed by management. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: 

  • Limited to students who are classified spring semester as a sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student, or recent graduates.  
  • A basic knowledge of or previous involvement in event planning and programming. 
  • This internship is in-person with no opportunities for remote work; Interns must reside in Dallas for the entire duration. Housing is not included but we will assist in locating and securing. 

Ability to: 

  • Ability to navigate rapidly shifting priorities.
  • Operate and use computer and software packages including database, spreadsheet and word processing. 
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 
  • Work under pressure and stressful deadlines.  
Requirements

EXPERIENCE and TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED and EXERCISED

  • Reports to the Director of Livestock
  • Works independently with minimal supervision. 
  • Uses discretion of significant matters related to business.  

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions: 

  • Office environment; exposure to computer screens. 
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions and on uneven and/or slippery surfaces, as necessary, especially during Fair time and special events.  

Physical Conditions: 

  • Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for 
  • Remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time. 
  • Moving short and long distances to access office supplies, meet guests, perform duties within Fairgrounds, etc. 
  • Verbally communicate with both internal and external contacts. 
  • Occasionally lift objects no more than 50 pounds unassisted.
