  TITLE:    AGRICULTURE EDUCATION TEACHER
 
QUALIFICATIONS:  Must have a minimum of Bachelor’s degree in education.  Hold a valid teaching area.  Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.
 
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and the Assistant Superintendent - Curriculum & Instruction
 
JOB GOAL:  The Agriculture teacher at Poplar Bluff High School is dedicated to the development of an educational
environment that will deal with Agriculture and its many facets.  The instructor shall teach on the following topics but not limited to: Conservation, Ag Power, Ag Construction, Ag Structures, Animal Science, and Vet Assistant.  The instructor will teach students who pursue entry-level jobs and entrepreneurship in agriculture. They will also be responsible for advising the FFA Chapter.
 
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  1. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  2. Content knowledge is aligned with appropriate instructions.
  3. Creates a positive classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  4. Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
  5. Encourages students to set and maintains standards of classroom behavior.
  6. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects.
  7. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media.
  8. Strives to implement by instruction and action the district's mission.
  9. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  10. Teacher has effective working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  11. Teacher actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
  12. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  13. Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  14. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life.
  15. Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  16. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees, as required.
  17. Recognize the influence of research on the agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources sector and other aspects of our society, such as medicine and consumer products.
  18. Assess the interrelationships of agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources with other segments of society.
  19. Become familiar with the influence of public policy on the agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources sector.
  20. Develop an appreciation of agriculture for vocational and leisure interests.
  21. Promote creative interests of students.
  22. Promote meaningful and practical applications of the content of other subject matter areas, such as mathematics and science.
  23. Provide guidance regarding the opportunities in occupations requiring knowledge and skills in agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources.
  24. Assist in improving the economic efficiency of the agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources industry and individuals with careers in industry.
  25. Promote balance and meaning in the total education program of the school and individuals.
  26. Assess the contributions of agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources to society.
  27. Assist present and prospective employees in agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources sector to improve their efficiency.
  28. Utilizes effective communication and provides learning opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners.
  29. Uses student assessment data to analyze and modify instruction.
                               
                                                                                               
Specific Responsibilities:
 
  1. Teaches knowledge and skills in one or more of the following subjects to secondary pupils; Horticulture, Landscaping, Greenhouse Management, Agriculture, Science 1, Agriculture, Science 2, Animal Science, Conservation and Natural Resources, Agriculture Business and Economics, Crop Science and others aligned with DESE Standards.
  2. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  3. Develops lesson plans and organizes daily classes so that demonstration, instruction, and practice can be completed within the allotted time.
  4. Demonstrates Hands on Activities in the Greenhouse Lab and with other areas of Agriculture.  Prepares appropriate instructional aides and display materials to enhance learning.
  5. Instructs pupils in use, care and safe operations of Greenhouse and Landscaping and Animal Science Tools. 
  6. Maintains an auditable record of pupil attendance.
  7. Controls assigned district-owned technology and supplies to prevent loss or abuse.
  8. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the laboratory type classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
  9. Instructs pupils of the importance to employers setting accuracy, neatness, efficiency, resourcefulnes and good work habits.
  10. Evaluates each pupil's performance regarding knowledge and skills in course being taught and prepares pupil progress reports and employment references.
  11. Maintains continued contact with the agriculture community to keep in touch with job entry requirements and current business methods and equipment.
  12. Evaluates, selects and requisitions books, instructional aides, equipment and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records.
  13. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities.
  14. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
  15. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day or during summer months.
  16. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  17. Participates in faculty committees and advisory committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  18. Assesses students in accordance to vocational competencies.
  19. The instructor will submit all reports required by the Missouri Department of Education and FFA office in a timely manner.
  20. The instructor will maintain an active program during the summer. The instructor will continue to supervise students’ SAE’s. In addition, the instructor should work with the local community on projects or activities. Also, the instructor will attend professional development.
  21. The instructor will outline a summer calendar through google calendar shared with administration detailing FFA activities, PD, SAE visits, meetings, etc. that he/she will be attending. The summer calendar should also include the instructor’s 10 scheduled vacation days.
 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:   Number of days in school year.  Salary to be established by the Board.
 
EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Missouri Educational Evaluation System.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
 
  1. Must be able to communicate orally and in writing.
  2. Must be able to read printed and handwritten material.
  3. Must be able to hear to evaluate student’s oral skills.
  4. Must be able to move freely throughout the classroom.
  5. Must be able to lift and carry up to 30lbs.
  6. Must be able to climb a chair or a small ladder to change bulletin boards, etc.
  7. Must be able to monitor the behavior of the students.
  8. Must be able to design and present appropriate lessons in multi-media.  (Examples: Whiteboard, smart board, related technology and physical demonstrations.)
  9. Must be able to input attendance, grades and other student information in Student information System.
