The Agronomy Specialist will work under the direction of the Agronomy Lead and alongside varying research programs to provide agronomic irrigation support to all groups within the Woodland, CA Research Station. The Specialist will be responsible for various agronomic tasks while having a strong focus on irrigation management. The ideal candidate will have a background in irrigation, agricultural practices, and workload and crew management.

 

What You'll Do:

  • Individual will work with experiment managers in the planning, execution, and management of irrigation activities. Collaborate with researchers to understand irrigation needs and adjust plans accordingly.

  • Implement irrigation schedules and strategies to support research objectives.

  • Ability to take and manage field data. Maintain accurate records of water usage, irrigation schedule, and system maintenance.

  • Monitor and maintain irrigation systems including pumps, layflat/drip, and sprinklers to support research and agricultural projects.

  • Supervise and lead a team of irrigators, providing trainings, guidance, and organizing daily workload.

  • Promote a safe work environment. Maintain site safety by conducting regular inspections of irrigation equipment and infrastructure. Ensure safe working conditions for team members through activity auditing. Identify and address any issues prompty. Participate in safety committees, audits, center-wide safety programs, and comply with all center and company policies.

  • Preferably have a familiarity with row crops (including but, not limited to corn, sunflower, tomatoes, leafy greens, peppers, melons, and brassica vegetables) and permanent crops (vines and trees).

  • Ability to operate farm equipment.

  • Ability to support field trial operations outside irrigation including but not limited to field preparation, planting/transplanting, field scouting, greenhouse operations, pesticide applications, harvest and hand labor as needed. Other duties and cross-training in other aspects of row and permanent crop agriculture, agricultural research, station and facility support, and maintenance as needed.

  • Experience with MS Office software and other data management software.

  • Ability to work in outdoor environment with exposure to the environmental extremes of the Sacramento Valley.

  • Possibility of periods of extended work hours and overnight travel during field season may be required.

  • Identify improvements in procedures and protocols within allotted time constraints.

  • Identify appropriate and efficient uses of station research project resources.

  • Assist in the logistics of agronomic equipment and employees to complete research tasks in a timely manner.

  • Make daily decisions associated with conducting experiments that reflect Company Policies.

  • Decide priority of work activities to meet assigned deadlines, balancing all assigned projects.

 

What Skills You Need:

  • High school diploma with 5+ years experience OR bachelor's degree with 3 years of experience

  • Preferable familiarity with irrigation systems and on-farm usage.

  • Excellent verbal, written communication skills, organizational skills and computer skills/experience.

  • Excellent personal interaction skills and ability to work as a team member with a diverse group of people.

  • Must be capable of doing physical lifting (up to 50lbs).

  • Must have a clean driving record.

The salary range for this position is $67,680.00 to $75,200.00.

This reflects a reasonable estimate of the targeted base salary for this role. This role is also eligible for an annual bonus. Based on factors such as geographic location and candidate qualifications, actual base pay is determined when an employment offer is made.
