Job Summary: The Farm Hand will assist the Farm Manager in transforming Castle Farm into a productive and well-maintained property. This role involves significant cleanup work and the operation of heavy machinery to prepare the land for future agricultural activities. Experience or interest in regenerative agriculture, aquaponics, metal work, and woodwork or carpentry is a plus. Candidates with experience are preferred, but we also welcome individuals who are eager to learn and grow in this field. Please note that a 3-month trial period will be in place before a decision is made regarding permanent employment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Property Cleanup: Conduct extensive cleanup of the property, including removal of debris, old structures, and overgrown vegetation.
  • Heavy Machinery Operation: Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes, bulldozers, and excavators under the guidance of the Farm Manager.
  • Infrastructure Development: Support the development of farm infrastructure, including constructing access roads, installing fencing, and preparing fields for future planting. Skills in metal work and woodwork will be valuable for building and repairing structures.
  • Aquaponics Support: Assist with the setup and maintenance of our aquaponics system, including monitoring water quality, supporting plant and fish health, and learning about aquaponics operations.
  • Regenerative Agriculture Practices: Support and learn about regenerative agriculture practices aimed at enhancing soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience.
  • Metal Work: Apply skills in metal work, including welding and fabrication, for building and repairing equipment and infrastructure. Focus on neat and precise work that ensures long-lasting results.
  • Woodwork/Carpentry: Use woodwork and carpentry skills for constructing and maintaining various wooden structures and fixtures around the farm. Aim for precision and durability in all projects.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on machinery and tools, ensuring they are in good working order.
  • Independent Work: Manage assigned tasks efficiently with minimal supervision and demonstrate the ability to work independently.
  • Assistance and Direction: Follow instructions and guidance from the Farm Manager, ensuring tasks are completed to the required standard with neat and precise workmanship.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Farm Manager and other team members to coordinate tasks and contribute to the overall success of the farm development.
  • Safety: Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols while operating machinery and performing physical tasks.

Essential Skills and Requirements:

  • Reading Literacy: Ability to comprehend and analyze written materials, including manuals, safety guidelines, and work instructions.
  • Writing Literacy: Proficiency in clear and effective written communication for documenting work, reporting issues, and following instructions.
  • Mathematical Literacy: Strong skills in basic mathematics and numerical analysis for measuring, calculating quantities, and managing resources.

Work Hours:

  • Typical Workday: 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with a 1-hour break.
  • Flexibility: Employees have the option to work additional hours if they desire and if they are demonstrating productivity and effectiveness during their standard hours.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in farming or land development is preferred but not required.
  • Experience or interest in regenerative agriculture, aquaponics, metal work (such as welding and fabrication), and woodwork or carpentry is an advantage.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to learning.
  • Ability to handle physical labor and work in various weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and self-manage tasks effectively.
  • Basic knowledge of farm operations is a plus but not required.
  • Pay rate will be determined based on experience and education.

Housing:

  • On-Site Accommodation: For candidates who choose to live on-site, private bedroom accommodations are provided with shared access to a bathroom, kitchen, and living room.
  • House Rules: Candidates must be respectful of other employees and residents. Adherence to house rules and maintaining a positive living environment is required at all times.

Substance Use Policy:

  • At Castle Farm, we do not condone the use of any mind-altering substances during work hours. This includes prescription medications with warnings about operating machinery, drowsiness, or potential hazards. Cannabis and cannabis products are strictly prohibited during work hours, with no exceptions.
  • If residing on-site, candidates must also adhere to the policy of no excessive alcohol consumption or drug use. Violations of these rules will result in immediate termination of employment.

Trial Period:

  • A 3-month trial period will be in place to assess performance and fit before making a decision regarding permanent employment.
