Job Title: Livestock Farmer
The Seasonal Livestock Farmer will be an integral part of the livestock operations in collaboration with the Livestock Director, Livestock Senior Coordinator, and Livestock Team. This is a role for which one year of previous farm and/or livestock experience is preferred but not required. This individual understands the nature and pace of the work, and will support all functions of the livestock operation such as feeding and watering animals, pasture movements, moving mobile fencing, milking and milk handling, and sorting, loading, and handling animals. They are organized, attentive to detail, observant, with a strong work ethic, and are able to work within an integrated team of farmers, chefs, researchers, and other experts while supporting educational programming.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the daily care and management of all animal groups; including feeding, watering, rotating, herding, grooming, weighing, catching, loading, sorting, and treating animals.
- Work with the Livestock Team to maintain all fencing, water, and feeding systems.
- Safely navigate and operate various tools, machinery, and farm equipment.
- Work collaboratively with the farm and ecology team to execute the comprehensive land management plan (i.e. grazing plan, pasture rotation, woodland management programs, waste-feed and compost systems).
- Assist in the maintenance of detailed records of daily activities and research projects
- Participate in the research and development associated with the various farm enterprises.
- Support livestock educational programs and help support tours with our partners from Blue Hill.
- Assist with keeping work spaces, tools, and equipment clean and organized.
- Communicate and work effectively across departments in a collaborative team environment.
- Other related assignments as necessary.
Physical demands
This is a highly physical role. While performing these job duties, the employee is regularly required to see and reach. The employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand for long periods of time (e.g., up to 8 hours or longer). The employee is required to use dominant hand coordination for simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation. The employee is also required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, bend, squat, kneel, and reach above shoulder level. The employee may be exposed to extreme temperatures, dust, dampness, moving machinery, food allergens, and cleaning agents. Due to the nature of the farming industry, the employee may be required to work longer hours and varying schedules to reflect the business needs, which may include overtime, weekends, and holidays. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Desired Skills/Knowledge
- A season of experience on a farm and/or in animal husbandry and livestock production
- A commitment to working with ruminant animals, swine, and poultry at a production scale
- An interest in the principles of pasture management and regenerative grazing techniques
- Hard work ethic, and a willingness to learn
- A valid driver’s license
- A desire to collaborate with an integrated team of farmers, researchers, and chefs
- Ability to follow detailed directions, ask questions when needed, and retain information for future reference
- A willingness to work in a variety of weather conditions.
- Proven ability to manage time wisely, and prioritize tasks effectively
