Camp Abe Lincoln - Wrangler

Camp wrangler will be in charge of all things related to the Equestrian program at Camp Abe Lincoln: feeding, veterinary care as well as trail rides and summer camp riding is the responsibility of the camp wrangler.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Serve as a role model to members and Y staff and, at all times, lives the mission, vision and values of the YMCA movement as well as insuring that every program activity moves forward the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
- Teach horsemanship activities to youth/adult groups, while working to insure the safety of every individual on camp property. Teach assistant wranglers about equine care and teach them to help teach program participants.
- Have the ability to communicate and work with children and adults during their horsemanship activities and provide necessary instruction to campers and guests.
- Have the ability to observe camper and guest behavior while on and around the horses, assess its appropriateness, enforce applicable safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply effective behavior-management techniques.
- Strive to meet the spiritual, emotional, relational, and physical needs of the campers and guests.
- Insures the health and well being of all horses while on camp property or in use by Camp Abe Lincoln.
- Identify and equipment that is in need of repair and report those repairs needed to supervisor or repair them if it is possible without cost.
- Have the ability to mount and dismount their horse on the average of 10 times a day.
- The Wrangler will be expected to work as a team member with the other YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley staff toward the overall goals of the camp.
- Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations including knowledge of emergency procedures and location of emergency equipment. Adherence to all policies and procedures of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley.
- Participate in and solicit others to participate in necessary YMCA financial development efforts, specifically the Annual Campaign
- Maintain certifications listed under Certificates and Other Requirements.
- Regular and timely adherence to respective schedule/meetings.
- All other duties as assigned by the Branch Director.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma Required
- 2 years of equestrian experience is required
CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be able to pass background check
- CPR/First Aid/AED certification*
- Mandatory Reporter*
*Note: The * noted certification training programs are provided by the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley staff and must be obtained within 30 days of hire, if not currently certified.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Some physical requirements of the Counselor Wrangler position could be endurance, including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Needs the ability to carry approximately 20-pound saddles short distances up to 25 feet, and lift them to the backs of 15-hand-high horses. Need to be able
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will experience daily exposure to outdoor conditions which will vary depending upon the weather, including but not limited to, sun, heat, humidity, rain, cold, etc. Must be willing to live in a camp setting and be exposed to outdoor plants and animals such as poison ivy/oak, bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
