Position Summary
The Wrangler Supervisor is responsible for the daily care and well-being of the horses living on-site. This position works in conjunction with the Equestrian Supervisor in the delivery of an equestrian program ensuring it is safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities. They coordinate and provide management to the physical operation of the equestrian facilities and equipment. Camp Lakota is a Girl Scout overnight camp that serves girls in grades 2-12.
GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp
The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery.
The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage the care and wellbeing of all horses on site.
- Ensure horses receive adequate feed, water, grooming, and veterinary care.
- Be present during all riding times, unless otherwise instructed.
- Properly supervise horses and follow all necessary ratios.
- Inspect horses daily for soundness and regularly observe for any sign of injury or illness.
- Monitor the horse’s workload and ensure weight restrictions are followed.
- Groom horses prior to being saddled up.
- Manage and supervise the physical facilities and equipment in equestrian areas.
- Set up equestrian areas in accordance with safety procedures and established GSGLA protocols.
- Manage and supervise equestrian areas, ensure upkeep of corrals, arenas, and equestrian areas.
- Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment for safety.
- Check equipment and report maintenance requests to the GSGLA Camp Director.
- Conduct a daily check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair prior to every ride.
- Survey equestrian areas daily and keep the areas free of hazards and debris.
- Support a safe, innovative, and fun equestrian program.
- Follow GSGLA camp program schedules that meet GSGLA camp goals.
- Evaluate the riding abilities of campers and staff.
- Match horses with appropriate riders and gear.
- Assist in the execution of the equestrian program.
- Participate in trail rides.
- Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety procedures.
- Ensure that ACA standards, state codes, and guidelines from GSGLA are followed.
- Teach and monitor proper use of equipment and horse care.
- Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
- Provide guidelines for programs utilizing camp equipment.
- Participate as a member of the camp staff team.
- Attending all camp staff meetings.
- Assist in the planning of any special events in equestrian areas.
- Assist where needed on camper arrival and departure days.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Documented endorsements of extensive successful experience in formal horseback riding instruction.
- Previous equestrian experience in an overnight camp setting.
- Experience in driving heavy equipment.
- Ability to drive, possession of a valid driver’s license, and clean DMV record.
- Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR prior to first day of work.
- Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
- Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.
- Ability to live onsite acting in an on-duty capacity for the duration of the camp season.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience
- A current certification from the Horsemanship Safety Association or Certified Horsemanship Association
- Experience with supervising staff within an equestrian program
- Animal first aid training recommended
GSGLA Employee Requirements
- Comply with state-mandated reporter training.
- Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned.
