Equine and Agriculture Support Staff

Job Summary

The Equine and Agriculture Support Staff duties may involve the horse and animal care, feeding and exercise of the programs horses, plant, and harvest, care of plants and crops, and general labor work. Incumbent will set up and operate equipment, prepare and care of animals, and plantings for the Sewa Uusim Program both on and off ranch facilities such as the Pascua Yaqui Tribe's Tortuga Ranch facility.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Assist the Lead Ranch Caretaker with the management of livestock, plants, and crops located on the ranch.
  2. Follow exercise schedule for horses and other animals, monitor and water and feed supplies, maturing, and care of crops.
  3. Perform a variety of duties related to the feeding and watering of all stock, care of plants, and crops.
  4. Perform daily, basic care of horses, stable work such as cleaning stalls and pens, and performance areas.
  5. Prepare livestock for shows, community events, and Sewa Uusim/Systems of Care group therapy sessions.
  6. Perform saddle and tack maintenance and care of equipment.
  7. Work on equine plant activities with tribal youth and members.
  8. Set up and oversee day-to-day schedule for plant and crop care.
  9. Notify managementabout the physical conditions of the animals, crops, or equipment under their care.
  10. Assist, the Lead Ranch Caretaker, as a guide for Tribal guest to the Ranch as needed.
  11. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Ranch and Agriculture duties of desert vegetation and wildlife in Southwestern Arizona;
  • Best practices for greenhouse, habitat, planting, and care of crops;
  • Exercise personal safety;
  • Best practices for horse care, including but not limited to, health care, exercise, feed, and environmental safety;
  • Saddle and tack maintenance;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.


Skills and Abilities:

  • Repair and maintenance of equine facility equipment and crop improvements;
  • Ability to perform all activities relating to planting and care of crops;
  • Ability to provide horse, crops, and equipment care;
  • Riding skills;
  • Examine animals to detect illness, injury, or disease, physical characteristics, and report concerns to the supervisor;
  • Operate farm equipment;
  • Drive manual transmission and 4WD vehicles;
  • Pull a horse trailer;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.
Education, Certifications and Experience Required

High School Diploma or GED plus one (1) year of general maintenance experience;or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

AND
  • Wrangler experience preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to drive manual transmission and 4WD vehicles;
  • Must be able to operate farm equipment;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's CDL License or obtain one within ninety (90) day of hire;
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends;
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
