DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS – PRISON ENTERPRISES

This position will be domiciled at Angola.

THIS POSITION WILL BE FILLED AS A PROBATIONAL APPOINTMENT 

or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE

 OF LOUISIANA STATE GOVERNMENT (State Employee)

 

This position may be filled as:

  • DETAIL: The selected employee may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • PROBATIONAL APPOINTMENT: Current permanent status classified State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment, if selected.
  • TEMPORARY JOB APPOINTMENT: This position may be filled by temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

 

There is Premium Pay for this position: 

A rate between $.50 and $1.00 an hour for each regular hour worked, based on years of service with DOC.
This position offers an additional $0.58 per hour for location pay. If domiciled at Angola.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of crop and/or livestock farming experience that involved the use of mechanized equipment; or experience in a correctional or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation or classification of offenders engaged in farming activities.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.
 
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
Job Concepts

Function of Work:
To manage and supervise all agricultural activities on a correctional facility to produce commodities for consumption and/or sale.

Level of Work:
Manager.

Supervision Received:
Broad direction from the Prison Enterprises Assistant Director 1 - Agriculture or Prison Enterprises Regional Manager.

Supervision Exercised:
Direct over lower level subordinates.

Location of Work:
Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Corrections Services, Prison Enterprises.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from Prison Enterprises Farm Supervisor by responsibility for managing and coordinating all aspects of agricultural activities at a correctional facility.

Differs from Prison Enterprises Regional Manager by absence of responsibility for managing all agricultural activities within a designated region.

Differs from Prison Enterprises Assistant Director 1 - Agriculture by absence of responsibility for all agricultural activities in Prison Enterprises.

Examples of Work

Plans, directs and coordinates all large-scale farming activities at a correctional facility.

Ensures implementation of all plans, policies, and procedures established by the Prison Enterprises administration.

Determines amount of production; plans land, time, equipment, and personnel use to meet production plans estimates.

Orders feed, seed, fertilizer, chemicals, equipment and supplies needed and purchases livestock.

Oversees the work of the farm through inspections and conferences.

Oversees the maintenance, repair, and operation of various pieces of hazardous farming equipment.

Confers with administrators on major problems or projects and production goals; takes action necessary to see the production goals are timely met.

Maintains compliance with appropriate institutional policies pursuant to ACA/ACI standards.

Conducts monthly safety meetings/inspections and submits safety reports to appropriate staff.

Meets with Wardens, Assistant Wardens, and Institutional Security personnel to resolve problems by influencing or motivating these individuals to work toward Prison Enterprises goals.
