Job Description:

Dr. Shelby Gruss seeks a motivated and experienced Research Scientist II to join her team in advancing innovative agronomic research. This position offers a blend of laboratory and fieldwork, requiring expertise in research operations, data analysis, and project management.

The Research Scientist will oversee daily lab and field activities, including data collection, planting, laboratory analyses, and maintaining equipment and supplies. During the summer, a significant portion of time will be spent conducting fieldwork such as planting, fertilization, maintenance, data collection, and harvesting. Experience operating large field equipment, including tractors, is highly desirable. In the winter months, the role will shift to supervising laboratory activities, processing plant samples, and preparing them for analysis using advanced tools like the Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS) for forage quality assessments. This work also involves managing data preparation and analysis.

The role requires the management of research projects from start to finish, ensuring objectives are met and timelines are adhered to. Collaboration is a key component, as the team frequently partners with other lab groups to drive the success of joint projects. The Research Scientist will supervise undergraduate student workers and other lab personnel, fostering a productive and collaborative environment. Additionally, there are opportunities to contribute to scholarly publications, explore personal research interests, and engage with cutting-edge analytical equipment.

This position at Iowa State University offers a supportive and innovative environment that promotes professional growth and the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the agronomic field. Joining Dr. Gruss’ team provides an exciting pathway to shape the future of agricultural research.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage Research Projects: Oversee the planning, implementation, and completion of research projects from start to finish, ensuring adherence to timelines and research objectives.

  • Fieldwork Management: Coordinate and participate in all aspects of agronomic fieldwork, including but not limited to planting, fertilization, maintenance, data collection, and harvest activities. Ensure all fieldwork aligns with research protocols. Supervision and Training: Supervise and mentor undergraduate student workers and other lab personnel. Provide training in lab procedures, safety protocols, field data collection methods, and the use of analytical equipment.

  • Laboratory Oversight: Maintain and manage laboratory operations, including developing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and overseeing the handling of hazardous materials.

  • Data Collection and Analysis: Conduct precise in-field data collection and laboratory sample processing, including preparing plant samples for analysis. Operate analytical instruments such as the Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS) for forage quality assessment and ensure data accuracy.

  • Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain large field equipment such as tractors and field and laboratory instruments. Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and ready for use in field and laboratory activities.

  • Research Support: Assist in preparing, processing, and analyzing research data. Documentation and Reporting: Keep thorough records of all experiments, procedures, and findings. Contribute to the preparation of research reports, presentations, and publications.

  • Collaborative Efforts: Work well with others, as Dr. Gruss’ team works closely with other lab groups to ensure project completion and that all tasks are complete.
